South Road Cricket Club

Cricket is back this Week….

Cricket resumes this Saturday so Training is back on this week – Tuesday and Thursday from 5:30 at the Cage.

PRESIDENTS PRE-CHRISTMAS MESSAGE. Apologies to everyone for not getting the following President’s Message out earlier, Steve sent the following just before Christmas.

Round 6 was a right off due the hot weather on the second Saturday of the round. Not having a crystal ball I could not predict how we would have gone but we may have won all three of those matches. Unfortunately the B grade had already lost on the 1st innings the previous Saturday.

Ladder positions at half way mark of seasons as follows;

A grade 7th on 18 points 10 points outside top 4

B grade 9th on 10 points

C grade 4th on 27 points

D grade 9th on 17 points

At the half way mark of the season the C grade are well place to have a crack at the finals, the A’s would need to win every game after Christmas something they did last season, The B’s are in a tough division being only one of the two B grade sides playing against A teams in Section 2. The D grade are developing some younger players and are showing encouraging signs in most games.

Graham sorry you still have to wait for your 100th game, but from my reckoning should be the first game after Christmas New Year break. I know you will get there!!!

Round 7 matches commence Saturday 9th January to 16th January, practice to resume on Tuesday 5th January and Thursday 7th January. If you are going away or otherwise unavailable for this round please advise your Captains early.

The next A grade match is an important fixture for the club as we will be playing Keswick Cricket Club for the Maetze/Bradbrook cup. The cup was instigated by John Zadow a few years back when he was playing for South Road, he thought, Keswick and South Road were two of the oldest and largest clubs in the association with much tradition, that we should play for a cup. It has been named after two legends of each club Brian Maetze of South Road and Paul Bradbrook of Keswick.

This year it is South Roads turn to host after match presentations where the cup is presented to the winning team hopefully us. This is a special night for our club as a number of our Life Members will be in attendance . Meals will be available on the night and I expect all players and members to attend. Presentations will start at 7pm on Saturday 16 January in the Edwardstown Football Club Lounge. Get around this event support your club meet your clubs “Life Members” many from the days before I was playing.

Have not herd any stories or rumours lately so please let me know if your hear of anything worthy of publication.
The club,committee and I would like to wish all players and members and their families a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Safe New Year and look forward to seeing you at practice in the first week of the January

Regards, Steve Mitchell
